Insights from Charlotte Denn
Yoyo Mom reached out to Charlotte to share her experiences and thoughts:
Q: Are you a mom?
A: Absolutely! I’m a proud mother of two beautiful children: Madison, who is 6 years old, and Arlo, my 7-month-old son.
Q: What are the ups and downs of being a mom?
A: The joyful moments come from simply being with them; they make me laugh every single day! Balancing work, school runs, and a baby can be challenging, but the rewards make it all worthwhile.
Q: What inspires or motivates you?
A: The designs for What Mother Made are primarily influenced by vintage shapes and patterns. I admire the simplicity and beautiful designs of clothing from the past. I frequently scout jumble sales and flea markets for older children’s clothes, which serve as a fantastic source of inspiration. While I may not find modern fashion inspiring, I absolutely love selecting fabrics; it’s one of my favorite activities as it combines creativity with shopping!
Q: What sparked your interest in creating children’s clothes?
A: My journey began with my daughter; I struggled to find classic styles in lovely fabrics, which led me to make my own. I initially sold handmade dresses at a market stall and quickly sold out. Since then, the brand has expanded at an impressive rate, and I believe people appreciate the love and care that goes into handmade items.
Q: What are your aspirations for What Mother Made?
A: I hope to see What Mother Made recognized internationally. However, I would never want to compromise on quality for the sake of growth. While expanding is certainly a goal, continuing to create handmade garments and sourcing my own fabrics remains paramount.
Q: Do you have any recommendations for moms in London?
A: London boasts fantastic trendy markets that make it unique. I particularly recommend Broadway Market in Hackney, which showcases some of the hottest emerging brands while offering great bargains.
Q: Any suggestions for kid-friendly spots in London?
A: Kids adore parks, and London has countless options! Interactive playgrounds like Holland Park Adventure Playground can entertain them for hours.
In addition to the online store, What Mother Made is present at Broadway Market every Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm, and at Abney Hall in Stoke Newington every other Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm.
