Transforming gamers with Nintendo Labo
If you or your children are not avid gamers yet, the Nintendo Labo may just change that! This isn’t your standard video game that you plug in and start playing right away. Instead, you’ll need to engage in some “serious” DIY crafting for at least 20 minutes before you can dive into game play. Of course, owning a Nintendo Switch console is essential to use and enjoy Nintendo Labo. If you don’t have one already, this game might just tempt you to buy one!
What is Nintendo Labo?
This imaginative kit for the Nintendo Switch combines a game with pre-cut cardboard pieces and accessories that allow you to create your very own toys, known as toy-cons. These interactive creations spring to life when paired with the Nintendo Switch console. My experience testing the Nintendo Labo with my son was incredibly surprising; I’m still amazed at how the developers created such a rich experience using simple cardboard and game controllers.
How to engage with Nintendo Labo
To start your Nintendo Labo journey, you must first assemble the pre-cut cardboard pieces. Each design comes with step-by-step tutorials available on the Switch. The instructions are user-friendly, allowing players of all ages and experience levels to follow along, and they can be repeated or skipped as needed. The time required to build each model varies: for instance, the remote control cars take around 20 minutes to assemble, while the piano can take up to 3 hours. Children aged 7 and older can participate in building these toys, with or without adult assistance.
Creative customization
A particularly enjoyable part of the building process is customizing each toy. We had a fantastic time adorning our remote control cars with stickers, googly eyes, and even pipe cleaners. Then, we raced our creations and engaged in sumo-wrestling-like fun, trying to push one another’s toys out of a ring. It was a delightful bonding experience!
Nintendo Labo launch details
The Nintendo Labo officially launches worldwide today, featuring two distinct kits. The first kit includes remote control cars, a piano, a fishing rod, a motorbike, and a house. The second kit showcases the much-anticipated robot, where you can construct a robot suit worn as a backpack, complete with pulley strings for your hands and feet, along with a special robot visor. Yes, you actually become the robot!
Unlimited creativity with the Toy-Con Garage
Once all the fun comes to an end and all the games have been played repeatedly, the real gem of Nintendo Labo is the Toy-Con Garage, a special feature included in each Nintendo Labo Kit’s software. Both kids and adults can utilize coding on this programming platform to develop and craft their own cardboard toys and designs. The potential for creativity is virtually limitless!
Intrigued? Give it a try!
If you’re still on the fence about this innovative game, I highly recommend giving it a chance. There are countless incredible tools hidden within the toy-cons. For instance, when engaging in the fishing game, you can create personalized fish using the piano, which has a scanner that generates musical scores tailored for the gameplay. There are so many clever little tricks and ways to enjoy Nintendo Labo, which truly become apparent once you start playing. Thankfully, we have a family birthday coming up soon, providing us the perfect opportunity to explore this engaging game even further. 😉
