P’tit Vélib’ – Bike Rentals for Kids in Paris

NOTE: P’tit Vélib’ is now closed! 🙁

Since June 2014, Vélib’, the practical city bike rental service in Paris launched P’tit Vélib’ for kids! Four different models are available to rent: the balance bike, the 12 inch, the 16 inch and the 20 inch, all ideal for kids ages 2 to 8 years old. The P’tit Vélib’ bike design remains fidel to the Vélib’ design. The 4 models each have a basket in front and the 16 and 20 inch bikes also have kickstands.  All bike rentals also come with helmets.

The Pros
– reasonable prices from 4€ per hour
– the possibility to test different sized bikes before buying one for your child.  Perhaps your child prefers the balance bike with no pedals or perhaps the bike with training wheels…
– helmets are offered for free with every bike… Safety first!
– the rentals are made at a bike shop or association which comes in handy in case you need to pump up your tires, or ask for assistance.

The Cons
– P’tit Velib’ cannot be rented with the Velib bikes on a public bike stand.  Therefore, renters are dependent on renting at the associations or shops.
– The P’tit Vélib’ is not yet offered throughout Paris, but only in specific areas which are kid-friendly!

We tested the P’tit Vélib’  in Paris in the 19th arrondissement. The Villette Park offers flat open space for perfecting bike riding.  Afterwards, we followed the bike path down towards Paris Plage! The kids had a blast with their P’tit Vélib’ bikes and give them two thumbs up!

  1. Has this service been discontinued? The link no longer works and I can’t find any current information about it.

    • Hello, It seems like it is discontinued. I will look into this to find out more. However, I know that the ownership of Velib has changed from JCDecaux to Smovengo since last year. If I have any more news, I will let you know.

    • Thank you for your response. This is correct. Therefore, P’tit Valid is no longer in service. I have modified the article. For info, a good friend and contributor also rents bikes for all ages. More info here: https://www.bikeabouttours.com 🙂
