Interview with Sam & Rich from Munster Kids

Meet Sam & Rich

Hailing from Sydney, Australia, Sam and Rich are the creative minds behind Munster Kids, a dynamic and urban children’s clothing brand. The journey of Munster Kids began in 2005, drawing its name from the playful urban legend of Mikey Munster, embodying the spirited mischief within every child. As devoted parents to three boys, Sam and Rich continuously find inspiration for their line of premium surf- and sportswear-inspired outfits tailored for kids.

Insights from the Designers

We’re thrilled to have had the chance to interview them for Yoyo Mom, and we eagerly anticipate seeing Munster Kids available in more stores across Europe.

What’s a mom? Are you a mom?

A mom is a fountain of endless, unconditional love. She masters the delicate balance of cooking, laundry, work, homework, sports, bedtime stories, and life itself, all while providing encouragement, support, new experiences, and a plethora of adventures. Yes, I am a mom of three boys.

What’s a dad? Are you a dad?

A dad is the champion of wrestling, who sees dinner as a perfect sausage sandwich followed by ice cream and popcorn for dessert. He engages in every sport imaginable while establishing the necessary boundaries. Yes, I’m a dad to three energetic boys.

The ups and downs of being a mom

I cherish the chaos that comes with motherhood—watching them grow, play, learn, and explore each day as their unique personalities flourish. The downside? Trying to keep up with their skateboarding and ending up with a broken heel.

The ups and downs of being a dad

Our boys, aged 5, 7, and 9, have distinct personalities, making it exhilarating to observe their discoveries as they evolve into their own individuals. However, the downside involves being the one they frequently test limits with, requiring me to enforce discipline.

What inspires or motivates your designs?

Our children are our biggest inspiration and motivation. They are a constant source of creativity for us.

What encouraged you to create clothing for children?

Rich had prior experience in the surfwear industry with his own label when our first son, Jax, was born. Finding it difficult to locate clothing for boys that we liked, I thought, why not create our own?

What is your ultimate dream for Munster Kids?

We feel as though we’re living our dream right now. Our brand is sold in over 30 countries and continues to grow, with our products available in some of the finest stores worldwide. We have successfully balanced our family life, work, and home, including spending over two years living in Vietnam. Travel and fun are integral to our lives. While life is good, working a little less wouldn’t be too bad either.

Do you have any recommendations for mothers in Sydney (or Australia)?

I adore markets and great coffee. Currently, my favorite spot is the Grounds of Alexandria in Sydney. Additionally, there are plenty of fantastic Farmers Markets throughout Sydney.

Any tips or places you recommend in Melbourne (or Australia) for dads?

The beaches are spectacular, so surfing is always a great option. For a fun day out with the kids, check out the national parks, such as Garie on the southern coast of Sydney, and then venture to Symbio Animal Park to meet native Australian wildlife. Attending a local sporting event or heading into the city is always a great way to bond with the kids.

What about fun suggestions for kids in Sydney (or Australia)?

Sydney offers a plethora of activities for kids. A trip to Taronga Zoo is always a hit. You can take the ferry to Manly, go bushwalking in the Blue Mountains, or just spend a day at the beach followed by fish and chips and ice cream.
