Meet Laura Jane, a French English textile designer who creates a collection of soft imaginative cushions in her Parisian workshop. Laura Jane uses fabrics including cotton velvet, floral Liberty print cotton, and hand embroidered details. She recently designed an exclusive collection of cushions for the brand le Marchand d’Etoiles as well as decorating their windows for the Fall season. Laura Jane’s products are now available for purchase on her Etsy shop or at le Marchand d’Etoiles.
Are you a Mom? I’m not a mom (no yet!) … But I work a lot with children. Along with sewing and designing pillows, I also teach English to kids.
As I have always shared a passion for children’s design, the playful patterns, soft fabrics and embroidery, I started making my pillows / soft toys at home with my sewing machine …
I always dreamed of having my own collection. I take great pleasure in designing new models combining different materials, and searching for beautiful vintage or Liberty fabrics.
I imagine designs that can appeal to both children and parents alike: beautiful cushions that sit nicely on a sofa and can decorate the home as well as a soft yet firm cushion for taking a nap.
What inspires & motivates you? I am inspired by the everyday, the children around me, I often read children’s fashion magazines. What motivates me: to live my passion! When I create, I have fun!
How do you see Laura Jane in 10 years? I hope that in 10 years I develop my range of products ton include cushions as well as stationery, illustrations, accessories etc. …
Any good tips or places that you recommend in Paris Mom & Kids?
In my neighborhood, I love the little cafe, Le petit café du monde entier, it is a multicultural, kid friendly café where you can enjoy good food and cakes, as well as a selection of beautiful objects and games for children and a nice space for play.
The boutique Chou Fleur, in the 5th arrondisement of Paris, offers a selection of beautiful things as well as creative workshops and birthday parties on Wednesday and Saturday.
Tell us more about your collaboration with the brand Le Marchand d’Etoiles…
The collaboration with Le Marchand d’Etoiles began with a small collection of cushions made with their fabric for the ears and they were sold out very quickly! So they asked for more and we realized that the collection of cushions match their range of clothes (soft fabric, delicate embroidery, ‘sweet dreams’ fell…). Then, they asked me to create the scenery for the window displays for ‘la rentrée’ (back to school) : I made a school bag, a blackboard and a pencil case to decorate the window, made out of cotton velvet and embroidery. We really like the idea of embroidered cushions!
Le Marchand d’Etoiles is showing the summer 2014 collection at Maison & Objet trade show and my cushions are also displayed. We will organize something in the shop rue du Pont aux Choux at Christmas but it’s a secret!
