Meet Grace Paik

Grace Paik is not just a talented artist, but also the visionary behind the innovative brand, Jaq Jaq Bird. The standout product of Jaq Jaq Bird is a fantastic coloring book paired with dust-free chalk, designed for repeated use. This creative solution makes for the perfect gift for children, whether at home, dining out, or while traveling.

Are you a mom?

Yes, I am a proud mom of three: two sons aged 16 and 12, and a daughter who is 14 years old.

The ups and downs of motherhood

That’s quite a profound question! To be honest, I face many challenges in this journey. Working from home has its perks, but it also comes with constant distractions. Balancing family and house responsibilities is an ongoing struggle. Often, I find that having my children around while I work can unintentionally signal to them that I’m too busy for them. No matter how much I strive to separate work from family time, it’s tough to set boundaries, especially given the time zone differences when my kids have adapted to my juggling act and shown patience over the years.

Another significant struggle is trying to guide my children effectively. My husband and I often worry they don’t internalize the values we teach them. Though we may be making sacrifices for their benefit, they sometimes display a sense of entitlement that makes me question our approach. Dealing with the teenage years adds its own layer of complexity, whether it’s them rolling their eyes at my advice or minor missteps like sneaking money from dad’s wallet.

However, on the brighter side, witnessing their genuine wonder and joy when they discover something new is irreplaceable. I treasure the moments when my 16-year-old still cuddles with me, sharing stories about his friends and school, or when my daughter opens up about her school friendships. Even my youngest finds joy in the little victories, like realizing mom can still beat him in arm wrestling—for now!

What motivates you? Where do you find your inspiration?

The biggest motivator in my life is my husband. I’m fortunate to share a strong marriage that encourages personal growth in every aspect of life. We can have long discussions without growing tired of each other’s company. Interestingly, we have few common interests, but we appreciate each other’s passions. While he’s an avid sports fan, I’m drawn to symphonies; he loves the great outdoors while I prefer the comforts of a hotel. Yet, our differences enrich our life together and provide diversity for our children. Our mutual love for food is one common ground where we both bond.

Travel also fuels my creativity for Jaq Jaq Bird. Experiencing different cultures and designs in places like Europe provides fresh perspectives for our product line.

How did Jaq Jaq Bird come to life?

I met my husband during my graduate studies in Chicago while he was working in a café owned by his parents. He was preparing for his Air Force assignment in Korea, while I was set to head to England for a Ph.D. program. Our two weeks in Chicago were filled with conversations before he left, leading us to elope in Korea six weeks later. Once our first child arrived, I needed a creative outlet while managing a newborn and a husband at work. What began as simple sewing projects evolved into something more when people began to show interest in my designs.

Fast forward five years: while my husband was stationed at the Pentagon, we faced a significant home renovation that went awry, leaving us kitchenless and dining out with our three kids for nearly four months. This struggle sparked the idea for a “chalk mat” designed to keep my children entertained in restaurants, and when other diners expressed interest in my creation, it motivated me to pursue the concept further. The launch of Jaq Jaq Bird stemmed from a desperate need to occupy my kids, ultimately leading to a thriving business that began entirely by chance.

What is your vision for the company?

In a world dominated by screens and electronic distractions, Jaq Jaq Bird emphasizes the importance of nurturing creativity in children through non-digital means. I aspire to see every home equipped with at least one of our products, encouraging children to engage in imaginative and manual activities. My goal is for Jaq Jaq Bird to become a household name, establishing partnerships with bookstores, schools, libraries, and other entities focused on education and creativity, aiming for success within the next five years.

Advice for young people and parents interested in Jaq Jaq Bird?

With features that allow for easy cleaning and repeated use, there are no boundaries to creativity. Favorite artists and influences

Dana Tanamachi, a talented chalk artist, is one of my favorites because of her commitment to her craft without shortcuts. Additionally, Vincent Van Gogh resonates deeply with me. He was a self-taught artist whose determination to improve his craft, despite numerous life challenges, is inspirational. His emotive brushstrokes convey powerful feelings that stir my own creative impulses.

Favorite children’s books

I have so many favorites, but a standout is Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson. This story beautifully captures a child’s boundless imagination. Another favorite is Jenny Linsky from the New York Review Children Collection, which portrays a lovable black cat with relatable struggles—a story I’ve shared countless times with my children.
