Meet Michelle Ferrara
Introducing Michelle Ferrara, a former South African model who has successfully transitioned into a talented photographer. After growing up in South Africa and living in both London and New York, she now resides in Barcelona and Paris. As a mother and an accomplished photographer, specializing in both fashion and children’s photography, we took the opportunity to ask Michelle a few intriguing questions.
Childhood in South Africa
How was your experience growing up during the Apartheid era in South Africa? “I was raised in a progressive household in the Eastern Cape. My father was a political activist, openly supporting the African National Congress. From an early age, I knew in my heart that all people are equal. In fact, our unique differences enrich and strengthen us as individuals. One of my most vivid memories of change emerged two or three years before the ANC took power and Nelson Mandela became president. The headmistress at my school was English and advocated for progressive values, making it one of the first institutions to embrace ‘non-white’ children.
Knowing the school was aware of my background, I had the unique privilege of sharing a boarding room with the first girl who arrived. Inside the school’s boundaries, we were making history; however, outside, the community’s reaction was often hostile. It was a very conservative town. Fortunately, we were allowed off campus only once a week, and we would face stares and, at times, insults on the main street. This experience made us hold our heads high and stick together even more tightly. Reflecting on it now brings a smile to my face, as that was over 20 years ago. Madiba’s legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched profoundly. To say this may sound cheesy, but he has always been my hero! If I could have met and photographed anyone, it would have been him!”
Motherhood
Are you a mother? “Yes! Life has blessed me with a wonderful seven-year-old son.” What are the highs and lows of motherhood? “I believe the greatest gift for any child is having parents who genuinely love and respect one another and their children. With the blessing of a healthy child, everything that life brings can be seen as a positive—offering unconditional love while guiding your child in the right direction, witnessing their growth as they explore the world together.”
Daily Life
What does your typical day look like? “Every day varies; some days involve shoots, while others are dedicated to preparation, travel, scouting locations, casting, editing, and meetings. I maintain an active lifestyle and prioritize my health to care for others effectively.”
“When I am not traveling or shooting, my favorite moments are spent with my son. We engage in conversations on our walks to school, and even though I know he stalls bedtime by chatting, I cherish those times! We enjoy reading, cooking, visiting exhibitions, and attending concerts together.”
The Journey into Photography
How did your passion for photography begin? “I’ve been intrigued by photography for as long as I can remember. My grandfather always brought his camera when he visited, and we enjoyed dress-up games that turned into mini-photoshoots. I treasure those moments immensely. As a child, I was quite creative and often made fashionable items like clothes and accessories, selling them for profit to create even more. These childhood ventures naturally evolved into a modeling career, and eventually, I found my place behind the camera.”
Inspiration and Future Aspirations
What inspires you? “My upbringing in South Africa was rich with light, color, contrasts, and natural beauty. Inspiration can come from anywhere. My subjects, memories, travels, art, film, and simply life itself motivate me.”
Where do you see yourself in ten years? “In a decade, I aspire to be one of the most successful and renowned photographers and directors in the kids’, fashion, and lifestyle industry. I take life one day at a time, giving my all in each project I undertake.”
Recommendations for Families in Barcelona
What tips do you have for families in Barcelona? “Barcelona and its surroundings are filled with delightful discoveries. Families can unleash their imaginations when experiencing works by Antonio GaudĂ, Salvador DalĂ, Joan MirĂł, and Pablo Picasso. My son’s favorite place to visit is the science museum, which is suitable for all ages. It’s considered one of the best in Europe, designed so even toddlers can enjoy it. With interactive displays, space for exploration, and excitement to learn about the world—it’s a fantastic way to foster a positive attitude towards education.”
Dreams and Essentials
What are your dreams? “For my family and myself to be healthy, to embark on new travels and fully experience life.’
What are your essentials? “My family, cameras, open natural spaces, animals, the sound of children’s laughter, a piece of dark chocolate, and a hot cup of coffee.”
