Interview with Heidi Schaefer, designer of Nesta’s Nest

Get to know Heidi Schaefer

Introducing Heidi Schaefer, a designer originally from Sweden now based in Berlin, who is the creative mind behind Nesta’s Nest. With her beautiful handcrafted baby baskets, Schaefer meticulously designs and produces each nest to ensure high quality for babies aged from birth up to nine months. Her son was the first to try out Nesta’s Nest, and today, this cozy, multifunctional baby bed also serves perfectly as storage for books and toys. We’re thrilled to have met this inspiring mom and asked her some personal questions about her experiences as a mother and her products from Nesta’s Nest.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Since we adopted a dog, my mornings begin with a walk in the woods after I drop off Nesta at school. I create the nests in my home studio, so my work seamlessly merges with my home life—it’s not as compartmentalized as when I used to head to an office every day. I appreciate the flexibility to enjoy a coffee with a friend while running errands to meet suppliers and customers.

What inspired you to start designing Nesta’s Nest?

My journey began with the need for a safe place for my upcoming baby and the desire to create something special. I had a precise vision of the materials I wanted to utilize, aiming to ensure everything was as natural and safe as possible.

What motivates or inspires you in your work?

Life itself inspires me in different ways. When facing challenges, it pushes you to overcome and rise above; in easier times, it encourages you to relish and elevate your experiences. The diversity of human experiences is fascinating to me—how everyone discovers their unique ways to solve problems and enjoy life.

What is your vision for Nesta’s Nest in the next decade?

I see it as a thriving business with satisfied customers and committed employees. The nests will still be handcrafted with the same attention to detail as today, accompanied by numerous additional accessories.

Do you have recommendations for lovely spots for mothers or women in Berlin?

I suggest Café Einstein on Kurfürstenstraße for enjoying coffee and cake with a friend.

What about fun locations for children in Berlin?

Kolle 37 is a remarkable playground for kids, designed so that adults can relax away from the fun. The venue has staff teaching archery, woodworking, and pottery, along with a cozy log fire always crackling. It’s truly a special gem in Berlin.

What are your essential must-haves?

My essentials include Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream, tweezers, and chocolate.
