In our home we love listening to music and watching films. With various musical tastes and several activities going on simultaneously, earphones are essential. In order to make our earphones original, I’ve decided to decorate them with kawaii cute polymer clay characters. They are comfortable to wear and also fun! This DIY project is very easy to make and can be done with or without kids. Each character can be adapted in size according to your personal tastes.
You will need:
- Polymer clay (I used Fimo, but there are several other brands to choose from!)
- earbud earphones
- a knife
- a toothpick or needle
Making the Polymer Clay Heart
Step 1 Knead your clay to soften it and roll each color into a separate ball. Start with the white or light grey color first in order to keep each clay color clean.
Step 2 Starting with the red ball (approximately 3 cm in diameter), form the heart cleavage by gently pushing down on the top of the ball with a toothpick.
Step 3 Use the knife to cut the heart in half so the back of the heart is flat and the front is round. This will allow for sticking onto the back of the earphone better.
Step 4 (optional) If you would like to add eyes to your heart, then prepare two small balls of white clay and two small micro balls of black clay. Using your toothpick, gently place each ball one by one on the front of the heart, first the white balls, then the black balls on top. Pat down gently according to how you would like your eyes to look.
Making the Polymer Clay Cloud
Step 1 Knead your clay to soften it and roll each color into a separate ball. Start with the white or light grey color first in order to keep each clay color clean. The cloud ball measures approximately 3-4 centimetres in diameter.
Step 2 With your toothpick, carefully make indentations around the edges to form a fluffy could shape. This takes a bit of creativity, but basically any cloud shape will do!
Step 3 Use the knife to cut the cloud in half so the back of the cloud is flat and the front is round. As with the heart, this will allow for sticking onto the back of the earphone better.
Step 4 (optional) If you would like to add eyes and a mouth to your cloud, then prepare three small micro balls of black clay. Using your toothpick, gently place each ball one by one on the front of the cloud. Gently roll the third micro ball and cut a tiny millimetre off each edge to make the mouth and add it to your cloud. Pat down your cloud face gently.
Step 5 Now you are ready to bake your clay figures according to the package instructions. For the Fimo clay used in this tutorial, I baked the pieces for 25 minutes at a temperature of 110°C/230°F. (It’s necessary to double check the package instructions as each brand of clay may require a different baking temperature and time.)
Step 6 Once your figures are cooked and cooled down you can glue them onto the back of each earphone. Let your earphones dry overnight and then you are ready to go!
