Revive those nostalgic ankle socks
Remember those charming ankle socks adorned with pompoms from the 1980s? Well, they are making a trendy return today! Why not add a personal touch to your socks with some delightful pompoms? This DIY project is simple and engaging, perfect for doing with your little ones. You can create pompoms in all shades and the final outcome is undeniably adorable!
What you’ll need:
- A pair of sockettes
- Scissors
- A small ball of yarn
- Embroidery thread
- Embroidery needle
- Djeco Pom Pom Maker (ideal for kids!) or a standard four-pronged fork
Steps to create your pompom socks:
Step 1
Decide how you want to personalize your ankle socks. Choose a color for your thread, and feel free to mix and match by using multiple pompoms or stick with a single distinctive one.
Step 2
If you are using a pompom maker, follow the instructions provided in your kit. Otherwise, take your household fork and begin wrapping the yarn around the prongs about 40-50 times. Remember, more wraps result in a larger pompom!
Step 3
Take a piece of yarn, approximately 10-15 cm long, and insert it between the second and third prong of the fork, looping it around the top of the yarn you’ve wrapped. Tie a strong, secure knot.
Step 4
Cut the loops on each side of the fork. You can choose to cut the loops while the yarn is still on the fork or carefully slide it off first, then cut.
Step 5
Now you have a pompom ready! Use your scissors to trim it into a perfectly round shape or make it smaller if you prefer.
Step 6
Repeat the steps for additional pompoms as desired.
Step 7
It’s time to attach those pompoms to your socks! Thread your needle with the embroidery thread, ensuring not to tie a knot. Insert the needle from the inside back of the sock to the front top, then reinspect the needle through the same point to create a small loop.
Step 8
Center your pompom through this loop. Pull both ends of the thread tight on the inside back, and secure it with a tie to keep each pompom securely fastened on the back of your socks. Repeat this process for the other sock.
Step 9 (optional)
For additional customization, consider adding embroidery along the tops or attach extra pompoms for a fun twist! Enjoy your new stylish socks!
