My daughter recently fell in love with a beautiful braided headband from the brand Sessun.
At the moment, I am working on quite a few projects and I’d like to save a bit of money. Therefore, I decided to teach my daughter how to make her very own headband out of a few fabric scraps.
With this DIY tutorial, you can also learn how to sew a sweet and pretty braided headband with an old shirt, a few fabric scraps, or even a new piece of fabric. If you aren’t the sewing type, you can also easily find a few fun alternatives on the market, that are ideal for accessorising Spring and Summer outfits! 😉
What you will need:
– fabric (for 3 bands measuring 45cm x 8cm, & 1 band measuring 20 x 10cm)
– a pencil
– safety pins
– a 2 cm elastic band (about 15 cm long)
– a measuring tape
– a sewing machine with thread or a thread and needle for hand sewing
– an iron (not necessary, but recommended)
Cut 3 strips of fabric measuring 45 cm x 8 cm, and also a fourth strip measuring 20cm x 10 cm.
Fold each strip into two, right side facing right side, iron each strip and sew together leaving a 1 cm margin for each of the 4 bands.
Turn each tube right side out.
Optional: You can also stuff each of the three identical tubes with fabric scraps in order to make a more puffy braid.
Place the three bands one over the other and safety pin them together. Make a gentle, loose braid, and pay attention to not make the braid to tight. Close the braid with a small hand sewn stitch at each end.
Note: If you would like to make a smaller size headband, you can cut the elastic according to the specific head size. Measure the circumference of the head in order to make the correct size. This tutorial is for a headband with a head size of 57 cm.
Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic. Insert the safety pin and elastic into the fabric tube. Move the elastic through the tube. As the fabric bunches along, the safety pin will eventually arrive at the other end of the tube.
In order to assemble the elastic band to the braided band, stuff one braided end about 1 cm into the elastic tube and fold over the fabric in the elastic tube on each side in order to make a nice finish. Sew over the braid and the elastic tube with a 0,5 cm margin. Make sure that the elastic is included when you sew!
Et voila ! Your headband is finished!
