Are you a Mom? Yes I have 3 teenage daughters! 18, 16 and 13.
The ups and the downs of being a Mom?
For me there is nothing as fulfilling as being a mother/parent! The love that we have for each other is immense & they teach me so much daily. It is so wonderful to watch them grow and see the young women they are becoming, to see them express their individuality, their personalities and their sense of humor. However, being a parent is not easy and navigating through parenting teenage girls in today’s society is tough. I think the expectations from society and social media are unrealistic. I remember what it was like being a teenager and I think it must be so much harder for children today. As much as social media has its place in the world of business I think it’s an added stress in children’s lives. I find motherhood very fulfilling, but there’s always those rough days when I want to escape to a tropical island and return when they are all full grown responsible human beings! Unfortunately, my daughters’ father is not in their lives and parenting alone can be quite difficult at times, that’s probably the most challenging part for me.
What motivates you? Where do you find your inspiration?
My need to provide for my daughters is my biggest motivation and they are my inspiration. I love what I do and so my love fuels my passion. I find inspiration all around me, in the beauty of nature and the materials that come from this earth. I love natural materials & fabrics: minens, wools, handwoven antique fabrics… this is why I love to work with linen, it is such a beautiful fiber that just gets better with time.
Why/How did you create your brand?
I chose to create my brand and work for myself so that I could be around for my daughters when they were younger; to be able to pick them up from school or stay home with them when they were sick. I started out with nothing, just making dolls from the fabric and materials I had available. I was living in California when I started the business and my products were very well received on the East Coast which really helped to give me the boost I needed. Over time more stores started selling my products and I set up an online store. I have since returned home to Ireland and I have a studio in an old Chocolate Factory in the heart of Dublin city. It has taken so much blood, sweat and tears to create my brand. I feel as if I still have so far to go, but I love what I do! It is so satisfying to create something from raw materials and end up with a little toy or accessory that brings joy to a child or to be a part of their imaginative play in some way! Seeing how my daughters played when they were younger, how their imaginations were so rich and alive, was one of the greatest things to behold and to be able to contribute to that for other children in some way is a privilege.
What is your dream for your brand?
My dream is to continue to grow the business, to strengthen our wholesale and retails markets, and to make a difference by the jobs I create and the contribution I can make to both my family and society.
What is the latest news or events for your brand?
We are working on lots of great new linen products at the moment. We have also started to run monthly competitions and hope to giveaway lots of great products over the next few months.
What are your must-haves for the entire family (for dad, mom and the kids), whether it be beauty, fashion, accessories, books, websites, magazines, etc.?
Must haves for me are my bicycle. I cycle to and from work everyday and I cannot live without it. The current book I am reading is The Modern Natural Dyer. It is a feast for the eyes if you are into textiles or natural dyes. Magazines, I love include Selvedge Magazine. My beauty essentials are the Kiehl’s Tinted Moisturizer and the Burt’s Bees lip balm. For fashion, I have been living in warm sweaters and jeans all winter. Must haves for our family are wool, wool, wool, and more wool! It is so cold and damp in Ireland that we need lots of thick woolly socks and warm jumpers!
What are some good spots to visit in your hometown for the family?
Dublin is a jewel, there is such rich history in this city and the surrounding countryside never fails to disappoint. There are lots of great galleries and cafes in Dublin and you can be up in the hills within 30 minutes of leaving the city. I would recommend taking some hill walks in Co.Wicklow, its just magical.
